Board Training That Actually Fits Your Board

Hi!

I want to tell you about something that happened last week that reinforced why I do this work the way I do (and how I accomplish my work as well).

A client needed board training. Not the cookie-cutter, here's-your-binder-good-luck variety. Real training, as in:

  • How do we run an annual review process for our executive director?
  • We need to learn how to read financials without glazing over!
  • What's our actual role in fundraising?
  • How do we onboard new members so they don't spend a year figuring out what's happening?
  • What does good governance look like when we're not in crisis mode?

I could have cobbled something together on my own, or sent them a bunch of links to check out.

But, I'm not a finance expert, and I'm not a governance wonk.

So, instead of pretending to be and know everything, I partnered with two consultants who are excellent at what they do.

Perry Radford of Rad Philanthropy handled finances and fundraising training.

Stephen Newland from MoneyPath led governance and onboarding.

I coordinated and filled in the succession planning and transition pieces, and added a section on equitable nominations and training for new board members, especially folks with lived experience.

The result?

Training that was sharp, relevant, and designed for this board's actual needs—not a generic deck we've all seen before.

I'm excited about a new partnership: Christal Cherry of The Board Pro and I are teaming up to deliver some potent in-person training opportunities! Christal specializes in board search and intensive training work. If you're tired of surface-level one-size-fits-all, and want something transformational, we're building that.

As Christal and I put the finishing touches on this body of work, please hit reply and let me know if your board needs training! Let's talk and support a design of something that truly fits YOUR org's / board's needs. Training that addresses your organization's specific gaps and gets your board ready to actually govern.

The larger point here is this: Good consulting means knowing what you're great at, and partnering for the rest. Your board (and your org) deserves trainers who actually know their stuff, and/or trainers with a cadre of professionals in their network to pull in as needed.

I'm thrilled and thankful to have such a cadre of incredible folks.

Dream with me a bit ... your sabbatical is coming. Maybe it's in 8 weeks, maybe 8 months. You've started planning: ✓ Identified interim leadership✓ Created coverage plans✓ Communicated with your board✓ Blocked your calendar Here's what you probably haven't planned: Your return. I see this constantly in my work providing interim leadership for nonprofits—thoughtful (and in rare cases, meticulous) departure planning, with a hellacious and chaotic re-entry. Leaders return on their first Monday...

I'm a book person, always have been. Over the years I've collected a list of reads that have genuinely shaped how I think about leadership, transitions, and the work of leaving well, and I finally pulled them all together in one place: naomihattaway.com/books These are books I return to, recommend in client conversations, and honestly just love. If you're a reader too — or you're looking for something to hand to a board member, a departing ED, or a leader in the thick of a transition — I...

The Independent Sector National Summit — one of the largest gatherings in the nonprofit sector — finally put succession planning on their 2026 agenda. After years of watching this topic get sidelined by conference after conference, I was genuinely thrilled. It's progress! It's beyond time that we bring the reality that People Leave to stages where our decision makers and funders gather. Then I read the speaker terms. No honorarium. No travel. No hotel. A 50% discount off registration for...
