Can you complete these puzzles?

Every executive director, founder, and board chair will leave someday. The only question is whether it happens on your terms or in a crisis.

We wanted a lighter way to start that conversation, so we made two puzzles: a Leaving Well crossword and a Leaving Well word search.

Each puzzle holds 16 terms that every nonprofit leader, board member, and funder should have in their back pocket. A few are easy, and a few might make you pause (one clue asks what too many organizations don’t have until the resignation letter lands)

Three ways to use these puzzles:

  • At your next board meeting. Hand them out as a five-minute icebreaker, then ask: which words did we have to think about?
  • With your leadership team. Use the crossword to find the gaps in your shared language.
  • With your grantees or cohort. Funders, these make an easy conversation starter at a convening.

When you’re ready to talk about what a plan could look like for your organization, reply to this email or complete our contact form to book a conversation.

No pressure, and no pitch deck.

People leave. Be ready.

Two things stood out to me: Bishop Budde used the words “leaving well™️.” She told RNS she wants her successor and the diocese to thrive after she's gone. That's the whole point of the work we do. The runway is long. Nearly two years from announcement to...

A few years ago, Neighborhood Funders Group did something most organizations avoid at all costs. They looked directly at the pattern of hard exits among their own leaders—especially their women of color executives—and asked why it kept happening. Not "what went wrong with this one person”, but to ask what was going wrong with THEIR organization. That distinction is everything. NFG recently published an Accountability in Action Toolkit built from that work, alongside a companion piece by Amy...
