Dancing with Systems, some podcast episodes, and a Thank You.

Lately, we are nerding out over finding similarities and adjacent learning opportunities with existing frameworks, models, thought leadership, and more. Currently on our minds is the Dancing with Systems model from Donella Meadows, one of my very favorite systems thinkers.

Would love to know what you think of this article, and our take on her model as meshed with our Leaving Well framework!

Some of our favorite podcast episodes to share:

From our Network:

--> Searching for your next director of development? You don't have to tackle the transition alone. Katie Mendez at Built to Raise offers interim support if you need someone to step in and take the lead, or check out her new Development Transition Roadmap, for teams who can execute but need guidance on what to prioritize and how to stabilize fundraising during the search. Learn more here.

--> Overwhelmed with your website upkeep: Meet Jessica Donahue of Nimble Pixel Studios, who our team has utilized for some really amazing projects in the past. Jessica offers a helpful, budget-friendly option for small teams who don’t have the capacity for ongoing updates, security, and content changes.

--> J. Kelly Hoey — the woman, the myth, the networking legend — is releasing a portion of her new book, The Social Billionaire, for FREE. How rad is that?

Here’s how she framed it: “After 4+ years of research, writing, rewriting, back & forth editing with my literary agent, and testing this content with women across industries (+ geographies), I knew I had something powerful. Publishers acknowledged the need for the content…but when there were no immediate bites to publish, I decided to step off the “pick me publisher” merry-go-round and to do something contrarian – I’ve decided to give it away.

Just as I want women to network differently, I want to share my thought leadership differently. Why hold back information that could help women succeed by trying to fit into the traditional publishing model? In short, I decided to trust my gut and turn a ‘what now?” moment of rejection into a “why not!” go my own way turning point.”

Get Chapter 2 (which she describes as a treasure hunt full of juicy takeaways!) here.

In closing, I wanted to thank everyone who took time to share our recent team expansion opportunity with your networks, and a special thanks to everyone who submitted their interest and thoughtful responses. We had a wildly robust response (with the MOST fabulous list of hype songs contributed!), and we are excited to be interviewing our final candidates later this month. As we continue to grow our team and our impact, it is important that we find folks who can support our client needs while also challenging our internal systems and "this is how we do things." I'm excited to introduce you more broadly to our team in the coming months.

I hope you've been well as June is solidly upon us? I'm still reflecting on my sabbatical last month, during which I traveled to Morocco. The trip was partially to celebrate my 50th birthday (wow!) but also to really lean into the medicine I dose to orgs we work with. It was magical, and I'm even more bullish now about encouraging leaders to take sabbaticals (not reserved just for leaders by title!). We will share some more about lessons learned (including fiercely protecting your re-entry...

Picture this: It's your last board meeting as Executive Director. You've led this organization through a capital campaign, an executive transition before yours, a pandemic, and more than a few impossible budget cycles. You know your StrengthsFinder results by heart. Maybe you've done the Enneagram work. Maybe you've gone deep on Human Design. And still, when someone asks how you're doing with the transition, you don't quite have the words. I’m here to let you know that this isn’t a failure of...

Dream with me a bit ... your sabbatical is coming. Maybe it's in 8 weeks, maybe 8 months. You've started planning: ✓ Identified interim leadership✓ Created coverage plans✓ Communicated with your board✓ Blocked your calendar Here's what you probably haven't planned: Your return. I see this constantly in my work providing interim leadership for nonprofits—thoughtful (and in rare cases, meticulous) departure planning, with a hellacious and chaotic re-entry. Leaders return on their first Monday...
